Engr. Johnson Mark was a close associate of my Dad. He recalls a heartbreaking story of his childhood. He explains: my father was a Baale — a chief in the Yoruba tribe — in Lagos State of Nigeria. At this early stage of the state, immigrants flocked in from diverse regions and places into Lagos in search of settlement. These visitors were directed to my father's palace in search of a land space to reside, and with a few pieces of cola, drink, and a token, my father would welcome them into the society and allocate a piece of our community's land to them, with the joy of having new settlers. He believed this act of sharing our lands would foster growth in our community.
My father's joy was the expanse of our community, as it was all a typical forest. Lands had no value, as we had a mass of it and did, of course, nothing with these undiscovered resources.
In the days of this story, Engr. Johnson was in tears as his father continued to give out the community's lands, until the family was left with almost no land of their own.
He pleaded with my Dad not to make the mistake his father had made. This tragic story carries an ironic message for everyone — there is no bush or village anywhere that cannot become what Engr. Johnson's village is today: a metropolitan community in Lagos State.
